Lt Col Buice flew the original A1 Skyraider in Vietnam. In July 1968 he was providing cover for a formation of American helicopters flying in northern Laos when he spotted fire on the left wing of his aircraft. He deployed his parachute, crashing through the jungle, hitting a tree and injuring is shoulder. One of the Air America helicopter pilots arrived to help Lt Col Buice onto the lift. Due to weight constraints only one could fit. The pilot, Phil Jennings, put Lt Col Buice on the lift and stayed behind to wait for additional transport. They wouldn't see each other again until many years later.
