Thriving Through Wellness: Hiroko's New Beginning at Bob Hope Village

November 4, 2025

At a Christmas party on a U.S. Air Force base in Japan, Hiroko met her husband, and it was love at first sight. They spent 52 years together, creating lasting memories filled with love and joy. Sadly, nearly five years ago, her husband passed away, leaving a void in her heart.

Despite her grief, Hiroko found a new chapter in her life that has brought her joy, companionship, and wellness. When she moved to Bob Hope Village over a year ago, she discovered a community that truly felt like home.

At Bob Hope Village, Hiroko enjoys activities designed to keep her physically, mentally, and emotionally engaged. She participates in dance classes, Zumba sessions, and tai chi, which are all part of the community’s focus on wellness — programs made possible through the support of Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV) donors.

The Hope Wellness Program at AFEV supports residents in four key areas: physical, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. Through this program, Hiroko has found balance and a renewed sense of purpose in her daily life.

Physical well-being is a cornerstone of the program, and Hiroko has taken full advantage of it. After having a knee replacement, she was grateful for the on-site physical therapy service available at Hawthorn House. The staff is always ready to assist, driving her to appointments and picking her up afterward. It’s this level of personalized care that makes her feel supported and valued.

But it’s not just the wellness programs that have made a difference in Hiroko's life. She speaks warmly about the staff and fellow residents, many of whom she’s met and now calls friends.

Hiroko's story is just one example of the positive impact AFEV has on its residents. As Hiroko reflects on her life at AFEV today, she is filled with gratitude for the support she receives from everyone...from the donors who make these programs possible to the staff and fellow residents who make every day brighter!
